The Washington Demon softball team (6-25 overall) ended their week with a walk off victory. The Demons returned to the field Friday night at Washington’s softball complex for a non-conference battle versus the Williamsburg Raiders (12-17 overall). Washington erased two deficits in the game, winning the clash 5-4.

Washington fell into an early hole, allowing two runs on four hits through the first half inning. The two-run deficit stayed intact until the bottom of the fifth, when Washington took their first lead of the game. Eighth grader Haylee Wilson, freshman Megan Mitchell, and Taylor Dicks each forced a walk and scored a run in the inning, while freshman Morgan Brinning drove in two of the three runs in the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Williamsburg responded two innings later with a one out double by freshman Nicole Zuber, driving in two additional runs and regaining the lead 4-3 heading into the final half inning. A trio of freshman led the way for Washington in the bottom of the seventh inning, beginning with back to back singles by Mitchell and Brinning. An additional single by senior Kolbi Breard left the bases loaded for freshman Brooke Stout. Stout drove single into right center field, scoring Mitchell and Brinning for a 5-4 walk off victory.

Washington head coach Angie Schrader says a factor in the victory was the defense shown from her team, “We had tons of kids diving for balls, laying out getting dirty and making double plays.” Schader said, “We need people to do that and we have had lots of double plays this year, I can’t believe the amount we have turned.”

Washington won back to back games for the first time this season, and won four of their six games of the season during the last seven days.

The Demons improve their record to 6-25 overall, and return to the field on Monday in a non-conference tilt against the Central Lee Hawks.
