A Kalona man accused of stealing his grandfather’s debit cards is being charged with identity theft. On May 22nd, 45-year-old Bradley Thomas Allen was arrested and charged with three felonies; identity theft, unauthorized use of a credit card and second degree theft.
According to the criminal complaint, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified on May 15th that two debit cards stolen from a Wellman business were used to take money from two accounts. Authorities were told that Allen had taken the cards and PIN numbers for the accounts from a desk in the common area.
Records were received from both accounts showing locations, dates and times the cards were used, after which video and phone records were obtained that showed Allen using the stolen cards and acquiring money. Over $7,200 was stolen from a personal account, and roughly $580 was taken using the card linked to a business account.
The complaint says Allen admitted to stealing the cards from his grandfather and using them multiple times out of spite.
His arraignment is scheduled for Friday.
