Regional soccer brackets have been released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) and the Washington Demon girls’ soccer team (2-9 overall;1-5 Southeast) faces a stout opponent in the first round. The Demons are matched up in the Class 1A Region 8 soccer tournament against the No. 2 Iowa City Regina Regals (7-1 overall). It will be the first meeting of the schools since 2013.

The Regals are undefeated this season in Class 1A competition. Regina’s only setback was to Class 3A Cedar Rapids Prairie 3-1 on May 1. Junior Jenny Wick leads the Regals in goals scored, depositing 11 in the net. Her six assists are second on the team to fellow classmate Lauren Ronnfeldt, who has aided in eight Regals goals so far this spring. Senior goal keeper Hanna Stein posts a 90 percent save percentage, making 56 saves and allowing just six goals so far this season.

The two teams have both played the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks this spring. Washington fell 6-1 to the Golden Hawks on April 11th while Iowa City Regina cruised to a 10-0 victory over Mid-Prairie on April 27.

The first round of the Class 1A Region 8 girls’ soccer tournament kicks off at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 2 at Iowa City Regina High School.
