The head coach of the Washington Demon boys’ golf team is pleased with his team’s early season play. The Demons haven’t lost a competition this season, including winning the 2015 Burlington Golf Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
Washington heads into the weekend with best nine hole score average in the Southeast Conference at 160.5 strokes. The Demons have already defeated the Mount Pleasant Panthers, last years Southeast Conference champs, twice on the golf course this season. The Demons’ first win came via a tie breaker in the season opener April 10th at the Washington Golf and Country Club. Washington bested the Panthers on Wednesday in the Burlington tournament by three strokes to win the title.
Head coach Mark Berhow is happy with his team’s progress, and is focusing his practice efforts on managing each golf course. “Where do I want to hit my approach in to the green and then think about the shots needed to get there.” Berhow said, “So if they can think where do I want to be on my second shot approaching the green. If I hit two shorter shots, I am still ok. I don’t have to hit the big club all the time.”
Berhow says managing the course is especially improtant in road meets, and use range finders to help calculate the approximate yardage away from the cup.
Washington gets a chance to work on managing their golf games twice next week. The Demons boys’ golf team heads to Fort Madison for a Southeast Conference triangular with the Bloodhounds and Fairfield Trojans. The team will host the annual Washington Invitational next Saturday at Washington Golf and Country Club.
