A group of former KCII local baseball players will play on the same field as the Iowa Hawkeyes this evening. The Cornell College Rams, a Division III athletic program based in Mount Vernon, is set to play a single nine inning baseball game tonight against the Hawkeyes tonight at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City.
Five members of this year’s Ram’s baseball team played their high school ball in the KCII listening area, including three from Washington High School. The former Demons on the Rams roster includes: junior pitcher Jared Henry, junior infielder TJ Rausch, and freshman infielder Walker Breard. Rams sophomore utility player Andy Dodson played his high school baseball for the Lone Tree Lions, and sophomore catcher Josh Dimmitt graduated from Fairfield High School.
Rams head baseball coach Seth Wing says this is a dream come true scenario for his Iowa born players. “Most of these guys grew up wanting to be an Iowa Hawkeye.” Wing said, “This could be the next best thing in getting to compete against them.”
One of Wing’s recent recruits from the KCII listening area was recognized this week as one of the Midwest Conference’s Baseball Performers of the Week. Freshman first baseman Walker Breard was named the conference’s Baseball Player of the Week for his performance last weekend against Illinois State College. In three games last week, Breard totaled three doubles, four home runs, seven runs and 10 RBI.
The Iowa Hawkeyes are ranked 14th in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I poll. This is the third straight week the Hawkeyes have been a part of the rankings.
First pitch between the Cornell College Rams and the Iowa Hawkeyes is set for 6:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City.
