A tiebreak helped the Washington Demon boys’ golf team earn their first dual win of the season. The Demons welcomed their Southeast Conference rivals Mount Pleasant to town for a dual at the Washington Golf and Country Club Friday evening.

Winds gusting around 30 miles per hour out of the northwest caused high scores for both teams, and after nine holes the teams were even at 169 strokes a piece. Washington boys’ golf coach Mark Berhow says a tie in high school golf is decided by the lowest score of each team’s fifth place golfer.

Washington’s fifth place golfer Friday afternoon was freshman Dalton Meyers, who completed his first varisty meet in 45 strokes. The performance as three shots better than Mount Pleasant’s fifth place golfer senior Sam Van De Berg.

Berhow says this shows his team that everyone’s score truly matters. “It is a great reminder that every score counts, every stroke counts.” Berhow said, “Some of the guys might think I am play so poorly that my score doesn’t matter, they are going to count it today.”

The Demons best score of the day came from sophomore Tanner Coleman, who entered the clubhouse with a 40 on his scorecard. Junior Derek Anding finished his day with 41 strokes.

Washington’s boys’ golf team returns to competition on Tuesday at the Cedar Crest Golf Course in Columbus. The Demons are scheduled to play nine holes against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and the Columbus Wildcats.
