Wednesday is the last day to file timely returns for taxes. According to the Internal Revenue Service, more people are preparing their own taxes, an increase of five percent from last year. Also, the average refund for the United States is up nearly two percent to just over $3,000.

It is the first year in Iowa that an adoption tax credit is available. Social security benefits are not subject to the Iowa income tax. Also, the credit has been increased to $100 for volunteer firefighters, EMS and reserve peace officers.

The deadline is April 15th for timely returns.
