Now is the time to start growing seedlings indoors that can be transplanted outside when spring arrives. According to Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, to grow seeds indoors successfully high quality seeds, containers, a germination medium and lights are needed. The germination medium should be lightweight and porous, such as commercially prepared soil mixes.
Containers with seeds should be in bright light, but out of direct sunlight, as the heat from sunlight may adversely affect germination.
Crop Time (number of weeks from sowing to planting outdoors):
geranium 10 to 12 weeks
petunia 8 to 10 weeks
salvia and impatiens 8 to 10 weeks
marigold, pepper and eggplant 6 to 8 weeks
