Anyone born after 1972 is required to have a regular hunting license and be able to show a hunter education certificate before hunting in Iowa. A Hunter Education course is being offered in Washington this month, the first step in obtaining a hunting license. Iowa law requires that each student receive at least 10 hours of instruction, pass a written test, and pass a gun handling test to successfully obtain a hunter education certificate.

The five-session course will meet at the Washington Middle School from February 23rd to the 27th. Participants must be at least 11 years old to enroll. To register for the class, go to the Iowa DNR website.

In Washington County, last year 1,568 deer were harvested and 70 turkeys.
