Another batch of Washington Demon football players has found their way onto college football teams across the Midwest. On Wednesday, Washington seniors Daryn Sebelius, Tama Leutele, Tommy Peterson, and Thomas Bump all signed letters of intent to play football this coming fall.
Sebelius decided to sign with Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and plans to compete for the Tritons’ starting quarterback position next fall. Sebelius, who had several Division I-AA and Division II teams offering him spots at linebacker, says he wanted to continue playing quarterback in college, “It was a position I played for three years in high school.” Sebelius said, “I love having the ball in my hands and taking over the game as best I can. Linebacker would have been fun if I would have gone somewhere else, but I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much as playing quarterback.”
Joining Sebelius in Fort Dodge is Tama Leutele, who will vie for a position on the Tritons defense this fall. Leutele says he is excited to be playing at the next level with his high school teammate. “It’s a big thing to have a teammate with you going off into a bigger level of football.” Leutele said, “We are both excited, we have been playing for years now, and I am pretty happy to have a teammate that I know coming with me this fall.”
Peterson has also decided to go the community college route, signing with Iowa Western Community College out of Council Bluffs. Peterson, a two time all-district lineman, joins a team which has compiled a 57-10 record since their inception in 2009.
Bump decided to take his talents outside the state of Iowa, signing with Division II’s Missouri Western State University to compete for an outside linebacker position. Bump says a huge factor in choosing Mo West was the facilities the college provides. “The facilities are so nice; their indoor facility is insane and they are basically getting a brand new stadium that will be ready by next fall,” Bump said, “They are getting brand new turf, a brand new big megatron, and they are redoing the stands. It’s just a really nice place.”
Missouri Western’s campus is the training camp home of the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Griffons have former Washington alums Nic Williams (2010) and Brock Kimball (2011) on their current roster.
Washington head football coach Garrison Carter says the four athletes’ accolades speak for themselves. “As juniors they were able to be part of a team that went all the way to the state championship game,” Carter said, “They followed it up this year with losing to the eventual state champs (Pella) in the quarterfinals. A lot of playoff success, a lot of individual success out of these guys.”
Carter adds he could have three more players signing letters of intent with Division III colleges in the coming weeks.
