The first legislative briefing of the 2015 session was held in Washington Saturday morning. State Senator Rich Taylor, State Senator Kevin Kinney and State Representative Jarad Klein were in attendance. Each legislator provided an opening statement and then citizens in attendance were able to ask questions or advocate for issues. In Klein’s opening remarks he stated he feels such events are important as they provide a conversation with constituents.

Citizens asked about a variety of issues, ranging from education, to public health initiatives, to mental health services, to gas tax formulas, among others.

In regards to Governor Branstad’s budget not allowing to continue to operate the Mt. Pleasant and Clarinda mental health facilities, Taylor said he was blindsided. Taylor added it made him mad, when more beds are needed. He encourages citizens to reach out to the governor’s office with their concerns.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Jorgensen of Washington Community School District voiced concern regarding the school start date and state supplemental aid. He explained Washington wants to start classes to align with the Kirkwood schedule. Also, with the governor’s proposed budget, Washington will lose $300,000. Kinney said he was also disappointed in the governor’s budget.

The next legislative briefing in Washington will be held Saturday, February 21st, at 10 a.m.
