Phone scams are an ongoing issue in Jefferson County. According to Jerry Marsellus, Lieutenant with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, they receive around six calls a month related to scams conducted over the phone.

He says the individuals receiving these calls are usually told they’ve won money, but in order to receive their winnings, they need to pay a delivery fee. In one recent case, a caller claiming to be a representative for the George Young Foundation asked for a Jefferson County resident’s bank account information.

Marsellus adds no one who has contacted the Sheriff’s Office has fallen victim to these scams. He advises residents to never give out personal information over the phone, and to hang up on suspicious callers.
