Home field advantage played a role in the Washington Archery Club taking home top honors in their latest competition. Washington High School hosted 209 shooters from 13 different schools this past weekend for the inaugural tournament held at the school.

Washington had 10 high school shooters improve their score from their first competition of the year at Albia, and helped propel the co-ed Demon archery team to the overall team title with 3183. Junior Jade Wells shined for the Demons Saturday, scoring 277 out of 330 possible points. The effort helped Wells place third in the high school girls’ division and third place overall in the girls’ competition. Sophomore John Sands finished fifth in the high school boys’ division and sixth overall in the boys’ competition after scoring 273 points.

Washington head archery coach Jolleen Cerka says there was good feedback from the school’s first ever meet. “According to all the other teams that were here, they have been pretty satisfied, think our facilities are great, and they enjoyed coming down to our shoot,” Cerka said.

The Washington Archery Club’s next competition comes up January 3, 2015 as the Demons take part in the Anamosa Tournament. Washington hosts another archery tournament January 17, 2015 at Washington High School.
