The Washington Demon archery team begins their third season of competition this weekend in Albia. The team is seven months removed from competing in the national competition in Louisville, Ky. The Demons finished 142 out of 475 schools at the national competition.
Washington archery coach Jollene Cerka has several individuals who competed in the national tournament back for this upcoming season. “John Sands (sophomore) was one of our top shooters at nationals last year, he is back.” Cerka said, “Alex Sinn (senior), Jade Wells (junior), and Grace Schafer (sophomore) are also players who placed well at nationals returning for us.”
Cerka says interest in the archery team has grown each year it has been offered at Washington schools. “In the last three years we went from starting out with 40 individual to 120 individuals this year,” Cerka said.
The Washington archery team is competing this weekend at the Albia tournament. Flights begin at noon for Washington’s middle school team and 2 p.m. for the high school team.
