In 2012, 859 teen drivers were killed in crashes across the United States. This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week, which was established by Congress in 2007. In Iowa, drivers ages 14 to 19 make up 7.4% of licensed drivers in the state. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, of teenage drivers who were distracted in fatal crashes, one in five were distracted by their phones. And in 2012, of all the young passenger vehicle drivers, ages 15 to 20, 55% of those killed were not wearing seat belts.

All drivers are reminded to drive responsibly by buckling up, driving the speed limit, not drinking and driving, and not driving distracted. Parents, teachers and mentors are encouraged to set a positive example while driving.
