Poor weather may be impacting vine crops, including summer squash. According to horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, rainy weather may be responsible for poor pollination and rotting of small fruit, as bees and other pollinators must transport pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers to develop fruit. Also, because the plants need to be pollinated it is recommended to avoid spraying plants with insecticides during bloom.
Zuchinni and other long-fruited summer squash are ready for harvest when they are 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter and approximately 6 to 8 inches long. Harvest plants frequently for continuous production.
