A Fairfield man died Sunday when the plane he was piloting crashed. According to Jefferson County Attorney Timothy Dille, law enforcement was notified of a plane crash at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday with a small experimental aircraft in a cornfield at the Fairfield Municipal Airport. The aircraft was owned and operated by Robert Lyle Bollinger. It was determined that the plane caught fire and the cause of death is pending results of an autopsy.

Assisting with the case were the Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield Fire Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Federal Aviation Administration, staff at the Fairfield Municipal Airport, Jefferson County Attorney’s office and the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office.
