Jefferson County residents and people across the country who opened a seemingly innocent email now have computers infected with a virus. The Postal Service made the Fairfield Police Department aware of the situation yesterday. A number of residents in that area have received emails from the Postal Service that claim to contain package delivery information.

Opening the email transfers a virus that can steal personal information to the recipient’s computer. According to officials with the Postal Service, they never send notifications via email. If you receive this email, delete it, and contact local law enforcement.

The Postal Inspection Service is in the process of resolving the issue and shutting down the malware.
