Every 40 seconds someone in America is having a stroke, one of the leading causes of death in the country. May is stroke awareness month. A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing the brain tissue to die. Danielle Pettit-Majewski, Washington County Public Health Director, states it is important to know the symptoms.
She says to keep in mind the term “fast”, F – facing drooping, A – arm weakness, S – slurred speech, T – time counts, so call 911 as soon as possible.
Pettit-Majewski recommends that everyone see their primary care provider annually to get blood pressure checked, keep weight under control and maintain an exercise routine.
