A week proclaimed in 1962 by then President John F. Kennedy is observed across the nation beginning today, it is National Police Week. National Peace Officers Memorial Day is May 15th. This week is to recognize law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Two officers lost their lives in Washington in 1930, while trying to arrest a man for stealing a car, their names are Marshal Aaron Baily and Sheriff William Fred Sweet.

Also, a man originally from Washington, FBI special agent Terry Anderson, lost his life in the line of duty while he and other agents searched for Peggy Ann Bradnick, a kidnap victim. Bradnick was reunited with her family after the kidnapper was shot and killed.
