The Demon boys golf team hosted a triangular last night with the Washington Varsity against the Columbus Junction Varsity, and the Mid-Prairie JV against the Demon JV team.
Washington’s varsity team got the win, thanks in part to meet medalist Ryan Waite who shot a 39 for the round. Derek Anding carded a 43, Blake Weidman and Mason Rich both shot a 45, Tanner Coleman carded a 49, and Lane Burlingame finished out with a 54.
Demon head coach Mark Berhow said he was happy with the win, but that his team is still trying to find who they are.
“We were hoping for, as a team, having a little lower scores. Ryan Waite played very well, he said before the meet that he wanted to get down below the 30’s and he delivered that and so he finished very well. We had a couple of guys struggle that had been playing well for us, but we’re still just looking to who we are going to be this year, it is still early in the season and we’re still focused on improvement, and we didn’t see a lot of improvement tonight as a team, so we’ll work on some of that stuff tomorrow night in practice,” Berhow said. “Around the green is where we struggle, and we’re going to address that at practice and make that a focus at meets.”
Columbus had two players card 42’s with Zach Howell and Ethan Leyden. Other scorers were Eli Sents with a 44, Mitchell Griffin with a 47, Austin Edwards with a 48, and Alex Mincer with a 49.
Columbus Junction head coach Tony Simmons said it was a meet that shows some progress with his team, especially from his top golfers.
“With the boys, we definitely saw a little bit of progress. Zach Howell had a really rough start to his year, and I think he would agree with that. He has been up near 50 twice this year and there is no reason for him to shoot there, and he was down around 42 so that was good, and Ethan Leyden has been very consistent in the low 40’s and he shot 42 as well so it’s good to see those scores coming down a little bit, we should, and hopefully we can get some consistently good weather and get some volume holes in,” Simmons said
Top golfers for the JV teams were Andrew Waite for Washington with a 46, and Zach Owens for Mid-Prairie with a 63.
Washington won the Varsity meet 172 to 175, while they won the JV meet 196 to 265.
