The Mid-Prairie basketball teams are in action tonight when they host West Branch tonight.
The girls’ team has been off for a week, but come off of a 41-39 win over Wilton. Taylor Kurtz is the leading scorer by double the second player on the team with 14.3 points per game. The next closest to Kurtz is Alex Rath with 7.3 and Ali Riggan with 7.1 points per game. Mid-Prairie did lose to West Branch earlier in the year 48-36 at West Branch.
The Bears are led by Ashley Finnegan with 11 points per game, and Maddy Russell and Haley Poula assist in the scoring with 7.6 points per game each.
A win for Mid-Prairie would tie them for second place while a West Branch win would keep them in second place alone.
The Mid-Prairie boys are looking to bounce back after a big comeback loss to Washington on Tuesday. The Golden Hawks are led by Dayton Hall and Nick Stimson with over 11 points per game, but need Nathan Faselt, Spencer Shalla, Christian Johnson and Riley Sieren to step up and score when Hall and Stimson are cold or guarded.
West Branch is only scoring 40.5 point per game as a team. Their leading scorer is Bradley Arp with 8.9 points per game and Mason Hays with 8.4 points per game. West Branch has only three wins this season and the last time they played the Golden Hawks, Mid-Prairie won 59-34.
Mid-Prairie boys head coach Chris Kern says the win against Wilton may have been one of the best his team has played, and that his team will need another effort like that tonight to get the win.
“I though that [Wilton] was one of our better games, and it will take that kind of an effort again with West Branch at home, because they have some quality three-point shooters, they are capable of driving to the basket and those types of things,” Kern said. “We need to really be aware of where people are and who we need to shut down.”
