In a marquee match-up of Southeast Iowa Superconference powerhouses tonight, Winfield-Mt.Union travels to Highland.

Both school’s teams have been on fire as of late and it would only make sense to have them play each other for one of the final games of the first half of the season.

In the girl’s game, both teams have just one loss, with Highland’s coming against IMS and WMU’s against Mediapolis.

The Huskies have a plus 18 point margin average in their games, and look to three different players to lead the way with Cheyanne Adamson at 13.5 points per game, Samantha Dutton with 11.2 and Chelsey Lampe with 9.3.

The Wolves have outscore their opponents by a plus 12.5 point average this season, and look to Shleby Therme with 12.2 points per game, while Emily Mathews at 9.0 and Logan Hartsock can bring it as well.

WMU head girl’s coach Mich Wachs says Highland reminds them a lot of themselves.

“Highland is really playing well, and Jodi [Fink] does a great job with them up there, the thing that I continue to see as I look is that they are very balanced, so they remind me a lot of us, you’re not really sure when you pick up a paper or look at a box the next day, who is going to be the leading scorer,” Wachs said. “It’s hard not seeing them this year, a lot of times the score isn’t the biggest thing, you have to find out who is doing the little things. Who’s getting their rebounds, and who is keying things for them.”

Both teams will look for a big win tonight that will put one of them in second place with Pekin.

On the boy’s side of things the Huskies have lost one game to IMS, while WMU fell to Burlington- Notre Dame.

Highland got Josh Brase back last week, and he made a difference early scoring 18.5 points per game in his first week back. Chris Ford is also a man to watch out for with 16.6 points per game.

WMU looks to four scorers with 10 points or more per game. Garret Baker, Max Fricke, Jake Edwards and Zach Davis all are weapons that Highland will need to key on.

Highland head coach Marcus Hall said his team has to make sure they do what they do well.

“It’s about defending their players, and also distrupting what they want to do, but also to continue to improve on what we do,” Hall said. “Basketball isn’t an easy thing, it’s a very simple thing, you rebound [and] you defend.”
