Game Preview
Quick Look: Both teams come into this game with young rosters, but Washington is the only one who has real game experience grabbing a win last week over Eddyville-Blakesburg in OT.
About the Demons: Washington is a young team still developing early in the season. They have three players who are in the double digits in scoring with Seniors Dema Giardino, Grace Redlinger and Stephanie Fishback. All three girls were in the top five scorers last year and with the lack of height on the team will be called upon to score. Washington lacks height once again this year, with their tallest girl on the roster being Addie Pacha at 6’00”, but Washington will mostly look to their trio of 5’8” veterans in Dylann Schluetter, Addie Shive and Sydney Hoffman to post up down low. Even with the little bit of height the Demons are outside shooters, taking 36 shots from behind the arc in the first game.
Stat Leaders (Washington): Grace Redlinger 18.0 ppg, 71.4% FT, 7 steals 8.0 rpg; Dema Giardino 15.0 ppg, 22.2% 3pt-FG, 6 steals, 5.0 rpg; Stephanie Fishback 10.0 ppg, 7 steals, 2 blocks, 8.0 rpg
Quotable: “We have to get out to a faster start, this only having eight or nine points at the end of the first quarter stuff has allowed opponents to stay in the game early. We’ve had two big third quarters, which have been the deciding parts of each game, and with the WACO game the other night, it was a one point game and then all of a sudden in a three minute span we had them down 12. So we can score in bunches one we get going, it’s just we have to get going a bit quicker.” – Washington Head Coach Phil Long
About the Golden Hawks: Mid-Prairie kicks off their season tonight against the Demons for the Washington County rivalry. The Golden Hawks did play in their own Jamboree and took half of basketball loss to IMS giving up a 19-10 run in the process. If Washington was green, Mid-Prairie is greener, losing eight of their top nine scorers to graduation, including their two top scorers in Mariah Swartzentruber and Mallory McArtor. So who does return for the Golden Hawks? Taylor Kurtz returns, she was fifth on the team last year in scoring with 121 points. Past Kurtz Mid-Prairie will need to find four other full time starters. Kurtz who is 5’10” will provide a good post player down low for the Golden Hawks, outside of her Mid-Priarie can go with seniors Courtney Cayton, Courtney Shalla and Cailee Stumpf.
Returning Stat Leaders (Mid-Prairie): Taylor Kurtz 4.8 ppg, 20 blocks, 4.1 rpg
Inside the Numbers: 4-The number of combined points scored by Kurtz last year against the Demons
1– Number of times they will face each other this year. Last year they went 1-1 against each other, both losing on the road.
