Cover Crop Demonstration in the Area

Cover crops can improve soil quality and reduce soil erosion according to Jim Fawcett, Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist. A demonstration of aerially seeding a rye cover crop into standing soybean will be conducted just west of Iowa City. Also according to Fawcett, cover crops can help reduce phosphorus and nitrogen losses.
The demonstration will include local farmers sharing their experience with cover crops, including Stever Berger who has been seeding them for over 10 years near Wellman. The event will be held at the farm of Jim Meade on September 10th at 5 p.m.
The Jim Meade farm is located at 2331 340th St. SW, Tiffin (about a half mile south of I80 and 1.5 miles west of the Tiffin exit). A free meal will be provided by the Johnson County Cattleman’s Association, courtesy of Iowa Farm Bureau.
