The Washington softball team fell to West Burlington- Notre Dame last night 7-4.
Both teams traded runs in the second, but it was the Falcons who got another on the board in the third make the score 2-1. After the third starter Ashley Rausch was pulled after going three innings, giving up three hits, two runs, two earned, two walks and two strikeouts.
In the fourth Amber Linnenkamp came in in relief and things got a bit crazy. Washington gave up four runs, on four errors in the inning, letting the Falcons bat through the order and take a 6-1 lead, but amazingly West Burlington would also find some trouble, having an error in the inning that ended up helping score a run, making it 6-4, but that is the closest Washington would get, in the sixth the Falcons got one more across the plate to make the score 7-4 and the final.
Linnenkamp went four innings, giving up nine hits, five runs, but just two earned and no walks or K’s. West Burlington starter Kori Mesecher went all seven, giving up eight hits, four runs, three earned, three walks and struck out four. Top bat for Washington was Maddie Bohr who went 2-4 with an RBI and a run,and Joni Erwin who was 1-2 with two runs an a RBI.
Demon head coach Angie Shrader said you take out the fourth inning and Washington played some good ball.
“For the most part besides that one inning, we played pretty good ball tonight and our pitchers did what they needed to do, and we still put up quite a few runs against, I believe they’re still number one in 3A. So, take out one inning and it is a completely different ballgame.”
Washington plays Monday for the Conference Championship against Ft. Madison.
