Laws surrounding life preservers on boats are some of the most violated according to one conservation officer. Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Wes Gould says there needs to be a life preserver, type 1, 2, or 3, for each person on the boat, and anyone under 12 needs to be wearing one at all times. They also need to be usable and readily accessible. Gould adds fines for not meeting requirements run around $100.
