The Winfield Mt-Union volleyball team plays tonight for a chance to go to Cedar Rapids and the state tournament, but to do so they have to get through No. 2 Holy Trinity Catholic.

WMU comes into the game with a 28-7 record, 10.34 kills per set and 3.31 aces, while Holy Trinity comes in at 42-4, with 11.26 kills per set and 3.41 aces per set.

Defensively Holy Trinity has 10.58 digs per set and 2.95 blocks, while the Wolves have 12.44 digs per set and 1.55 blocks per set.

WMU head coach Dave Pieart says Holy Trinity may have more kills, but they only get them from one girl.

“I think we’ve had four different players lead us in kills at different times,” Pieart said. “We talked last night, while Trinity has one of the best offenses and their averaging 10.5 kills per game, we’re averaging 10.3. so we are right up there in the same basic boat as them, the difference is that they get half of their kills from one player, and ours are spread out a bit more.”

WMU has three players with 190 kills or more, with Shelby Therme right at 190 kills, Erica Robinson with 272 and Alicia Escher with 287 kills on the season, while Holy Trinity has two players with those numbers in Rachel Kempker with 221 kills and Mikaela Foecke with 557.

Pieart added that a key to tonight’s game is keeping their rallies down.

“The biggest key for us is if we can serve receive, if we can stop their serving streaks at one or two points, then we’re going to be right in there until the end,” Pieart said.

WMU and Holy Trinity face off tonight in Mt. Pleasant with first serve at 7:00 P.M.
