The Winfield- Mt. Union Volleyball team grabbed fourth place this weekend at the finals of the Southeast Iowa Superconference meet.

No. 15 WMU won their opening round match against Van Buren 25-13 and 25-7, but faced No. 2 Holy Trinity and lost 25-11 and 25-10. The Wolves then went to the consolation round and dropped the match to New London 25-16 and 25-21.

Alicia Escher had 15 kills in the matches, while Erica Robinson stayed close behind with 14. Katie Benson set up 39 points, while Shelby Therme dug up 17 balls.

Robinson also had 7 aces on the night.

Head coach Dave Pieart says it was a tough fourth place to swallow, because the teams they lost against were teams that were beatable.

“It’s better than where we were last year, so I’m happy with that, I’m a little disappointed with the way we played,” Pieart said. “I can live with a fourth place finish had we played up to our potential, but I don’t think we did. We would like more opportunities against the teams that I don’t feel like we gave them our best shot.”

WMU plays Highland tomorrow.
