In an effort to raise awareness about healthy swimming, the Iowa Department of Public Health is reminding everyone that this week is National Recreational Water Illness Prevention Week. These illnesses are caused by swallowing, breathing in mists of, or having contact with contaminated water in pools, water parks, hot tubs, fountains, lakes and other bodies of water.
Jeff Steers, Aquatics Director at the Washington Y says showering before entering a pool and to not wear street clothes or shoes near the pool and pool deck are steps that everyone can do to prevent these illnesses from spreading.
He adds infants should use tight-fitting swim pants that prevent leaks when in the water to avoid spreading illnesses. Steers says if the water should become contaminated, they have to close the entire pool and disinfect the water which takes away swimming time from others.
