Tuesday night marked a milestone as the No. 14 ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girl’s soccer team played the first game in program history as a ranked squad. Things were difficult early as Mid-Prairie fell behind 2-0 in the first half before a big rally after the break to complete a 6-2 win over Holy Trinity. Holy Trinity struck in the 19th minute when Ashley Conrad found the back of the net. After Mid-Prairie missed a penalty kick Holy Trinity doubled their lead with an Emily Tinguely (Ting-lee) goal in the 25th minute. The Golden Hawks cut the deficit in half in the 35th minute with the first goal of Ali Riggan’s (Rig-uns) hat trick. Out of the break Meghan and Kattie (Kate-ee) Redlinger helped take over the game with team speed. Coach Bristol Harris talked about the extra dimension of speed his team brings to the pitch.
“You put the two fastest people on the outside, and their defense didn’t stand a chance,” Harris said. “All of sudden they realized, ‘Hey these girls weren’t here in the first half, now what?’ and they would blow right past them.”
After Meghan Redlinger tied it with a penalty kick in the 44th minute she gave Mid-Prairie the lead for good with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute. With the score 4-2 midway through the second half the twins combined on a highlight reel header as Meghan found Kattie on a corner kick. Meghan talked after the game about the setup for that play.
“Normally I kick it really far, like past the goal,” Redlinger said. “So this time I thought I would just loft it in there, and Kattie just happen to be on the end of it.”
The win was Mid-Prairie’s first ever over Holy Trinity and helped the Golden Hawks improve to 8-3 on the season. Mid-Prairie will next be in action at Iowa City Regina on Tuesday.
