Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says his office has been extra busy this year processing gun permits.  He says since the new gun law took effect, he has seen a total of 840 permits to acquire of which 767 have been picked up.  Last year only 321 permits were requested.

This increase is the result of a change in the law that took effect the first of the year.  Iowa is a “shall issue” instead of a “may issue” state.

The permits issued are valid for five years if the person applying passes all background checks.  If you have any questions regarding Iowa’s gun law, contact your local sheriff.
