Alliant Energy has activated its Appliance Cycling Program to save energy during this week’s heat wave.  Justin Foss, a spokesman for the company, says participating customers who live south of Interstate 80 will have their air conditioners cycled on and off every 15 minutes to prevent excess energy use.  Foss says this process allows Alliant to purchase additional power from other utility companies.

The program is open to all Alliant customers, and participants are paid $8 each summer month, even if they’re power is not cycled.  Alliant Energy also offers a recycling program for electric water heaters.
