The IMS and Highland Husky softball Regional Quarterfinal game came down to the last inning. In a game heard on KCII, IMS struck first as Morgan Haifley led off the top of the second with a base hit. She would come into score on a Keilah Brokaw base hit to right to make it 1-0. Highland would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, with one out Mariah Freel came up with a base hit. Her courtesy runner Bridget Murphy stole second and Taylor Vonnahme laid down a sacrifice bunt and on the play after IMS threw Vonnahme out, Murphy rounded third and got into a run down. Third baseman Morgan Haifley threw to the catcher Jacayla Litwiller, who had trouble with the throw, but pitcher Laura Hochstetler promptly picked the ball up and tagged Murphy at the plate. Unfortunately for IMS the ball came loose on the tag and Murphy was safe tying the game at one a piece. That was the score in the seventh when Highland’s Kassy Vazquez reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt by Morgan Fisher. Allison Sojak came up with a base hit over the center fielder’s head to win the game 2-1. IMS was held to three hits on thee evening all of them in the second inning. Highland scattered their four hits throughout the game. IMS pitcher Laura Hochstetler struck out five and walked one. Highland’s Mariah Freel struck out four and walked one.
The Huskies improve 24-13 and move on to the Regional Semifinal round on Monday where they will face the Belle Plaine Plainsmen in Belle Plaine. The Plainsmen shook up the bracket with a big win over seventh ranked Don Bosco 6-5. IMS finishes 12-15 on the season.
