Thanksgiving Holiday History
Posted: November 25, 2010 @ 6:28 am In Today's Local News
Thanksgiving is today, a day first celebrated in 1621 originally as a three-day feast by the original colonists, and Native American allies including Massasoit, Chief of the Wampanoag tribe. Historians assume that the common foods we share today were not part of the original Thanksgiving meal. Many of them believe the original Thanksgiving feast consisted of more Native American dishes such as deer, lobster, seal and swan along with local fruits and vegetables. While most Americans celebrated Thanksgiving on no official day, it wasn’t until 1863 that President Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November to be the Thanksgiving Holiday.
