Today is Veterans Day. The remembrance began in order to mark the date that an armistice was signed at the end of World War One in 1918. Since then, countries around the world that were involved in that war have recognized November 11 as a day to remember those who were killed in military duty. In the United States, the day became known as Veterans Day after the Korean War in 1954, as a day to remember all veterans.
Tonight, dinners for veterans and their family and friends include the Keota V-F-W starting at 5. And the American Legion Post 351 will have a dinner at the Ainsworth Opera House at 5. Ceremonies in Washington are tomorrow, starting with an event at Blair House at 11 a.m.
Because Veterans Day falls on a weekend this year, many government offices are closed tomorrow. State offices, the Washington County Courthouse, and City Hall are closed tomorrow. The Washington public library will also be closed. Those offices will re-open on Tuesday.
