First Day of Summer

Posted By News On @ 6:21 am In Today's Local News | Comments Disabled

The official start of summer happens this afternoon, making today the year’s longest day with over 15 hours of sunlight.  Known as the Summer Solstice, KCII WeatherEye Meteorologist Sam Dunaiski says the earth is tilted more toward the sun providing us with the longer daylight hours.

He says the sun’s rays are hitting this part of the world more directly this time of year causing the temperatures to be warmer as well with the average temperatures being their warmest during late July and into August.

More about the first day of summer from Sam can be heard in today’s In Touch With Southeast Iowa program during the midday magazine.
