Many Iowa Republicans are opposed to the idea of Guantanamo Bay detainees being housed at a prison across the Mississippi in Thomson, Illinois. Some Democrats, such as the 4th District’s Bruce Braley, feel it could be a boost for river communities in the Hawkeye State. A spokeswoman for Southeast Iowa U.S. Representative Dave Loebsack says “public opinion in the surrounding areas must be taken into account as this process moves forward.” She says Loebsack “believes that the administration must evaluate and report to both Congress and state governments on the national security implications of transferring the detainees.”
