A proposed floor plan for the new YMCA facility as shown in YMCA promotional materials.

The YMCA of Washington County is over halfway to their fundraising goal of $10.8 million for a new facility in the City of Washington. The project received a $3.5 million grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. Director Becky Harkema shares they’re looking for other grants to help on the project and have spoken with Vision Iowa about a $1.5 million grant. They are hoping to close the funding gap before their next meeting with Vision Iowa, as they’re at 54% of funds raised currently.

The new facility will be constructed on West 5th Street and will include a full-sized gym, a larger pool, a fitness area and space for services clubs to meet. She adds there will still be 24-hour access to the fitness center.

Harkema is holding informational forums including one this Wednesday (2/17) at 6 p.m. and one Saturday (2/20) at 10 a.m. at the Washington YMCA.
