Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day is returning this week. Schools across Iowa have registered to participate in this year’s event, bringing students, families, and communities together to celebrate walking, biking, and rolling to school. It will take place on Wednesday.
Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day is an opportunity for schools to encourage students and families to be active, promote safe routes to school, and build excitement around walking and biking in their communities.
If your student will be biking to school on October 7th, Washington Police Chief Jim Lester recommends both motorists and cyclists remember the rules of the road, and use caution, “Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as persons in motor vehicles. They must follow the motor vehicle law. Bicyclists, they have to obey traffic signs, they should be stopping with stop signs, and things like that. When they are riding their bikes, it’s important that they ride with traffic, not towards traffic so ride on the right side of the road when you are on your bicycle.”
The Washington Community School District is signed up to participate, as part of 91 other registered events in Iowa.
Iowa has consistently been one of the top-performing states in the country when it comes to participation. In each of the past three Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day events, Iowa ranked fifth nationally for per capita participation among all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
