After winning a special election in early September, Travis Riggan officially took his seat as a Riverside City councilman at the September 21st meeting.

Riggan, the president of the Riverside Area Community Club and chairman of the annual TrekFest celebration, won election with 58.2% of the vote. He beat out Levi Schnoebelen, Nickie Nguyen, and former councilman Edgar McGuire. Riggan says he’s focused on bringing more attention to the activity building inside city limits, “I think my goal would be to figure out how to integrate in a way that people come more frequently into the town of Riverside rather than just turning left or turning right out towards the casino. Whether that be we set up more marketing that goes in between there and the casino, that can be signage or it could be Facebook or social media, that we have other amenities in town that can be located there. Whether it be a restaurant, different shops, and different ways to support our community.”

Riggan also shared that he’s committed to maintaining a healthy public school system. At Highland High School, Riggan is the varsity girls’ and boys’ golf coach. He was named Iowa Girls Coaches Association District 5 Coach of the Year after he led the Highland girls team to a runner-up finish at state this past spring.

His second meeting as a Riverside councilmember will be next Monday. His term runs through December 2029.
