In a battle of the top 10’s, the win went the way of S-K. The Sigourney-Keota Cobra football team managed to fend off multiple challenges from the Prairie City-Monroe Mustangs to earn a hard-fought 14-7 week one win in the Area Game of the Week heard live on the KCII3 Stream.

The Cobras began the night with the football, wasting no time on finding pay dirt. The Snakes marched 66 yards in just six plays to take an early 7-0 lead with an Owen Clark extra point. The drive was highlighted by a 50-yard Chase Clarahan to Ike Molyneux connection to get S-K into the red zone. The defenses would control the rest of the first quarter. The second frame saw the longest drive of the evening from either side when PCM drove 47 yards in 19 plays, only to have the Cobra defense bend but not break on their 31-yard line to reassume possession. Minutes later, Clarahan would float another pass down the chimney of the secondary, this time to Hunter Sellers to again get themselves on the doorstep at the one yard line. A play later, Clarahan paid it off to put S-K up 14-0 at the half. The only Mustang score came on a 41-yard Roston McCarty quarterback keeper in the third period. Although the Snakes would make mistakes to keep the door open, they would slam it shut in the closing minute with one final defensive stand to take the win.

Unofficially, Sigourney-Keota won the yardage battle 258-221, including 140-73 through the air. PCM won the ground game 148-118. The Mustangs also took turnovers 2-1. Clarahan led the way with his arm, with eight completions for all 140 yards and a scoring toss to Ayden Galindo. He also ran for a score. The senior was named Cobra of the Game, and joined KCII Sports live on the Area Game of the Week postgame show, saying he’s already looking forward to what lies ahead, “[It] feels amazing! I can’t wait for Wilton now. I feel like we were really close with them last year. Maybe our offense wasn’t where it was, our defense might not have been, and I think this year we’ll put a bigger test on them. It’ll be a lot better.”

PCM saw Roston McCarty complete eight of his 22 passes for 73 yards and the rushing touchdown. Bodhi Bonnett had 20 carries for 65 yards, while Jaden Houser led the way through the air with three catches for 38 yards.

The win moves No. 10 Sigourney-Keota to 1-0 on the young season, dropping PCM to 0-1. The Area Game of the Week returns next Friday for a Henry County rivalry between the WACO Warriors and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves.
