The Riverside City Council appointed Edgar McGuire to fill the vacant seat on the council. The appointment was made during the regular meeting of the council on Monday.

McGuire, a former councilmember, is the current chair of the board of adjustment and ran for city council in the November 2025 election. Pending any petitions that would force a special election, McGuire will take his seat at the next regular city council meeting on June 22, and will hold the seat until the next city election in November 2027.

McGuire was selected over candidates Bradley Fuhrmann, Levi Schnoebelen, Nickie Nguyen, and Scott Adkins.

Riverside City Administrator Cole Smith outlines the next steps for McGuire before his first meeting, “Oath of office is the primary thing. So all elected officials in the state of Iowa take an oath of office before starting. So, that would happen prior to the next city council meeting. At that point, Edgar [McGuire] also already has his open meetings and records training. That is a new requirement. All elected and appointed officials have to take an Iowa Public Information Board approved open meeting and records training. So other than that, just kind of some administrative things like getting email set up, W-2s. It should be a pretty smooth transition.”

In other business, the council approved a new contract for Washington County Sheriff law enforcement services at an annual rate of $288,369, an increase of $3,772 from the current contract, as well as heard reports from the City Engineer and City Administrator.

The council will hold their next regular meeting Monday, June 22 at 6 p.m. at Riverside City Hall.
