The Iowa Department of Transportation is warning Iowans about scam text messages claiming recipients owe money for unpaid traffic violations. According to the agency, the texts appear to come from the Iowa DOT or “DMV” and often include links that direct users to websites designed to collect personal and financial information.

The Iowa DOT does not send out fee collection reminders via text, and will never text customers asking for private or financial information. The agency also noted Iowa does not operate toll roads or bridges.

Officials advise anyone receiving these texts not to click on links, do not respond, and do not  share information. Instead, report the message using your phone’s “report junk” feature, then delete it.
