
January’s weather in Washington brought less precipitation than normal and slightly cooler temperatures on average. According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, last month Washington observed just under half an inch of precipitation. The normal amount for the first month of the year is 1.25 inches.
The snowfall amount was observed at six-tenths of an inch, well below the normal 7.5 inches. So far this season, Washington has had 11.7 inches of snowfall, about 2.5 inches below the normal total for this point in the season. The record snowfall for January in Washington was set in 1979 at two feet.
In January, Washington’s average temperature overall was 20.1 degrees, while the normal average is 20.9 degrees.
As February begins, warmer weather is in the forecast with temperatures expected to rise above freezing this week. According to the NWS, the last time the thermometer was above freezing in Washington was nearly two weeks ago, on January 22nd, when it reached 39 degrees. Listen to KCII for weather updates.
