
Local boys’ wrestling teams descended on Pekin this weekend to try and bring home a conference championship at this year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union had the best finish among local teams, taking second place to Burlington Notre Dame and coming just shy of back-to-back team conference titles.
Seniors Markel and Itai Zapiensz led the way for the Wildcats by winning individual conference crowns. Markel Zapiensz was the Super Conference champion at 215 pounds, winning both his semifinal and title bout by fall, while Itai Zapiensz did the same to bring home a championship at 285.
Junior Bowen Thomson nearly won another conference crown for Columbus/WMU, taking second place at 132 lbs, while senior teammate Jacob Nelson was third at 120.
Sophomore Tayson Samuels was sixth at 138, as was junior Tyson Kaalberg at 157, while the Wildcats also got fourth-place finishes from sophomore Justin Knipfer at 113; freshman Dante Orozco at 126; senior Riley Kaalberg at 165; and junior Trevor Phillips at 190.
Louden Huisenga remained undefeated for WACO on his way to winning another Super Conference championship at 190 lbs with three pins. Fellow senior Gage Samo would be runner-up at 120 for the Warriors, as would freshman Ian Maize at 106, while junior Harley Larrimore was third at 175.
WACO also saw junior Tyler Rogers finish sixth at 215, while freshman Anthony Carroll was fifth at 150, as was sophomore teammate Braxton Stauffer at 165, to help the Warriors finish sixth as a team.
Highland would take third in the team standings behind second-place finishes from freshman Cash Cole at 113 lbs, junior Brock Thomann at 126, and senior Isaac Kleese at 215.
Senior Landon Bell was third at 106 for the Huskies, as was sophomore Tyler Pierson at 132 and freshman Rocky Hamilton at 138. Sophomore Gauge Richardson took fourth at 157 for Highland, while the Huskies got sixth-place finishes from freshman Caleb Wheeler at 144 and sophomore Jose Ramirez at 190.
Lone Tree’s top individual finish came from freshman Trenton McKean, who was fourth at 106 lbs, while freshman teammate Easton Ronan was sith at 175. The Lions got fifth-place medals from senior Brody Magruder at 157 and sophomores Cole Walmsley and Brock Nebergall at 113 and 120, respectively.
Sigourney-Keota competed at the South Iowa Cedar League Tournament in North English and finished third as a team. Owen Menke led the way for SK by winning the conference title at 285 lbs with a pair of pins, while fellow junior Jacob Libe was the runner-up at 157.
Freshman Dillion Menke took third for Sigourney-Keota at 144, as did seniors Brady Clark and Ashton Schwab at 150 and 165, respectively. SK got fourth-place finishes from seniors Dawson Meyer at 138 and Zach Guffey at 215. Junior Gavin Khali ended up fifth at 132 for SK, as did Kaden Kopp at 175 and fellow senior Jayden Thompson at 190.
