We are living in a golden era of Washington Demon girls’ golf. All six of Washington’s team state championships have come since 2007, and four have been won in the last nine years, including one two years ago. The Demons are on the brink of bringing home another title as they descend on the Class 3A state tournament at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls the next two days.

Five Demon seniors are on the cusp of their second state crown, including Kaylin Long and Makenna Conrad, who both finished in the top 20 individually at state last season. Long is coming off her best round of the season, firing a seven-over-par 79 to finish runner-up at the 3A Region 3 tournament last week in Oskaloosa. Conrad has shot an average score of 83-and-a-half in 18-hole competitions, including a low round of 76.

Mallary Johnson and Haley Mitchell have both averaged under 100 strokes per 18 holes, while freshman Adalyn Long has looked solid in her debut season and has an average 18-hole score of almost 89.

Junior Maci Williams has gone as low as 91 this season, including eclipsing the century mark to help Washington post a team-best score of 339 last week at the region finals. But head coach Erin Thorius tells KCII Sports that it’s all been building to going back to state.

“We’ve played a few different courses this year,” Thorius says, “just to get [the players] out of their comfort zone. That was a big thing. Going to state last year, it was a little bit uncomfortable, and so we really wanted to get them more uncomfortable this whole season. So we’ve played against some different teams, some higher-caliber teams, and they’ve risen to the occasion each time. So I think they’re coming in ready to play their best and do what they can do.”

The Demons seek to add another state title to their trophy case today and tomorrow, with the first of two 18-hole rounds beginning at 9 o’clock this morning.
