Some of the area’s top boys’ athletes took part in the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Indoor Championships Friday at the Lied Athletic Recreation Center on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames. The big winners were the Columbus Wildcats, who won the Class 1A team championship with a score of 80 points, 27 better than second place.

Senior Triston Miller won two events, taking the 60-meter hurdles with a time of just over eight seconds and claiming the high jump by clearing six feet six inches. Miller also finished second in the long jump and ran a leg on Columbus’ winning 4-by-100-meter relay team with Jeff Hoback, Riley Kaalberg and Kaden Amigon.

Amigon was an individual winner for the Wildcats as well, posting the top long jump of 20’5.5″. The junior ended up second in the 60-meter dash. Hoback was third in the 60-meter sprint, while junior Damian Vergara dominated in the long-distance races, finishing fourth in the 800 meters and sixth in the 3,200, one spot ahead of classmate Cael Phillips.

The Washington Demons also had a strong showing in the Class 3A division, taking third as a team. Elijah Morris shined for the Demons, as the defending 3A state champion in the 400 meters took the event once more, this time in 48.49 seconds. The senior also finished third in the 60 meters. Senior Brayden Hartman was a winner in the shot put with a top toss of 53’10.5″, while junior Micah Rees claimed eighth in the 3,200. Washington’s 4-by-400 relay team was second, while the shuttle hurdles teams finished third and the distance medley team was seventh.
