The Washington City Council is holding a special meeting tonight at 6 PM in the Council Chambers at Washington City Hall. The meeting will be for the discussion and consideration of a resolution to set a public hearing for February 21st for the total maximum property tax dollars levied for the fiscal year 2024 budget. Under the procedures adopted by the Iowa Legislature and signed by Governor Reynolds in 2021, the City Council must have a max levy hearing in addition to their hearing notice prior to the formal adoption of the budget. The proposed levy increase is 5.27% due to increases in the general fund budget due to inflation and the loss of revenue due to legislation adopted by the state in 2021. This resolution would set the max levy hearing for the February 21st regular meeting. The hearing and adoption of the final budget are expected to take place at the March 21st regular Washington City Council meeting.
