While it didn’t end in more medals or accolades, three of the top area cross-country runners were still in top form at the Class 1A State Championships Friday in Fort Dodge. Two runners actually set a personal-best time. Despite finishing 43rd, Winfield-Mount Union Wolves sophomore Kohlby Newsom still ran his fastest career race with a time of 17 minutes and 36 seconds. Columbus Wildcats junior Damian Vergara was not far behind him, running a PR of 17:39 to finish 49th. Meanwhile, in the girls’ 1A race, Lone Tree Lions sophomore Vivian Zaruba clocked in at 22:19 in her first career state meet.
